Hand grinding for 10 min plus grinding under acetone for up to an additional 34 min in an automatic agate grinder produced significant changes in its diffraction pattern. However, further dry grinding in a ball mill for 10 min produced material that was almost totally disordered, based on measures such as the Hinkley index.
The particle size of the ground kaolin samples decreased and the particle-size distribution was more concentrated, indicating that the steam jet milling was more effective for kaolin processing than the conventional dry grinding process.

The present study examined the effects of dry grinding, using ball-milling, on the structure of reference well-crystallized (KGa-1) and poorly crystallized (KGa-2) kaolinite powders from Georgia.
After further grinding, the structure of the reaggregated particle seems to be zeolitic. Finally, the kaolin mineral thoroughly changes to a completely amorphous substance …
Kaolin is one of the most important clay minerals that attracts attention due to its various application areas such as the ceramic industry. In this study, the effects of solid/ball ratio and grinding time on the mechanical activation of kaolin were investigated. Samples with 10 µm particle size were activated in The Fritsch Pulverisette 5 Ball Mill …

Attention was also directed to the change of thermal reactions of milled kaolinite. Grinding experiments for 5 min, 10 min, and 1, 2, 4, 6, and 10 h were carried out in an AGO I planetary mill. After 1 h of grinding, the crystalline order of kaolin is destroyed; but the amorphization continues in the course of prolonged grinding.
