I picked this machine up from a fellow in Sarnia for 100 dollars. A Burke #1 mill. It's been highly modified by a machinist to have full 3 axis control. (Normally these machines had lever feed.) No graduations on the handwheels but I am sure I can use a dial indicator for measurement. The spindle and arbor have been redone with an MT2 taper.

This is a Burke #4 Horizontal Milling Machine in full working order made in a time in America when craftsmanship, precision and pride in product was paramount. Even though it was fabricated years ago it has had excellent care and minimal use. It is in perfect working condition; and really is an almost like new unit.

need to be: rpm = (4 x CS)/D this being a simplified formula, or RPM = (4 x80)/3 = 106 rpm. The countershaft with the pulleys works fine for this speed range. A small horizontal mill is nothing needing a sophisticated drive. The other point to consider is that the Burke Number 4 Milling Machines literally hung the drive off the vee belt.

First up is a new shaft for the vertical head. I have the drawing for the factory shaft, but decided to leave off the B&S 9 taper and have a 3/4" stub to go in a collet. This will make it smaller and easier to leave on the machine and just swing up when not in use. I got a piece of 1 1/4" CRS bar stock to turn the 1.125" shaft.
I have a mid 60's Burke Millrite, great machine for the home hobbyist. Powermatic bought Burke out and continued production with a different belt cover design. It weighs about 1500#.
